Cinderella is considered to be one of the greatest fairy-tales of all time. In fact, if asked, most people would say that it is the greatest. The story tells of a poor young girl who is mistreated by her step-mother and step-sisters, because she is so kind and beautiful and they are jealous of her. With the help of her fairy Godmother, Cinderella is transformed into a princess who is able to attend the Princes ball, which is to lead to a Royal marriage. The story dates back as far as the 9th century when it was first told in China. However, the first publication in print is credited to a French author called Charles Perrault, who was born in Paris on January 12th 1628.
Perrault was a poet who also wrote stories and popular fairy tales including, Sleeping Beauty, Little red Riding Hood and Puss in Boots. As with all the best fairy tales, there is always a happy ending and the goody will always win over the baddy. Charles Perrault died on May 16th in 1703.

Strabo was the first person to put it on paper but there are different versions of it around the world. The story was commonly used to teach young girls that good triumphs over bad. So each culture has their own version.

I've actually heard that an older version can be found and it was Greco-Egyptian. The story was first recorded by Greek historian Strabo in the first century BC.

Although Cinderella wasn't actually named Cinderella, she was called Rhodopis, the story follows the same plot as the Cinderella we know.

So if you're looking for who wrote the original story, Strabo is your answer. If you're looking for who started using the name "Cinderella", petrutiu might be right.

I think the first printing was with the Brother's Grimm, also known as Grimm's Fairy Tales. But it looks like the oldest known might be egyptian, around the 1st century BC. And was called Rhodopis. If you want to find out more to to www.wikipedia.org Hope this helps.

Very ancient story. Greek historian Strabo gave first version, approx 50 BC
There was also a Chinese version around 860CE.Often thought to be the original because it fits with the chinese practice of binding feet to make them tiny.

Commonest version written by Charles Perrault in 1697, based on a fairy tale
written by Giambattista Basile earlier that century

Surprising the amount of 'copying' eh?
