The Frog Prince is a children’s fairy-tale, and like a lot of folktales, it was passed down through oral tradition long before it was written down.

The version most people know is the one that the Brothers Grimm included in their collection Children’s and Household Tales.

Nowadays, the collection is more commonly known as Grimms’ Fairy Tales. The first edition was published in 1812.

Variations of The Princess and the Frog
  • In the Brothers Grimm version, the spell is broken when the princess throws the frog against a wall. I like this version better.
  • Other versions have the frog turn into a prince after spending the night on the princess’s pillow.
  • In more modern versions, the spell is broken by a kiss. This is the way most people know the tale.
Who Were The Brothers Grimm?
Jacob and Wilhelm Grimm were German academics who studied language and folklore, and who wrote fairy-tale collections for children. They didn’t invent the stories, but they did write the versions that made the tales popular.

The Frog Prince is basically a fairy tale. It is about a spoiled princess who befriends a frog. This frog then transforms into a handsome prince. Since it is a folk story, it has been told over and over again in several cultures of the world.

This story is best known by its written version by the Brothers Grimm. Brothers Grimm were two brothers Jakob and Wilhelm Grimm who are best known for publishing the folk tales and also fairy tales. They were German academics and their version of Frog Prince was the first and remains the best.
