The earliest version of Cinderella originated in China in approximately the year 860 A.D. It featured in a book called Miscellaneous Morsels from Youyang written by Tuan Ch'eng-Shih. This book dates from the Tang Dynasty. However the most well known version of the story was written by Charles Perrault, the French author in the year 1697. He based his tale on a common folk story which was previously recorded as La Gatta Cenerentola by Giambattista Basile in the year 1634.

Despite this, the best-known standard contemporary version of Cinderella, particularly among the English speaking population is the story brought to life by the animated Walt Disney film. The film sanitises the original plot to some extent.

This popular fairy tale exemplifies a classic folk tale myth. There is the notion of unjust oppression and triumphant reward and this theme is present in hundreds of versions of this same story before modern times. Even today, the story of Cinderella continues to prevail with numerous books, television programmes, plays, operas, ballets, musicals and the like being produced.
