Metaphors in poems are commonly used for comparisons. It shows that how two things which are not alike can be compared with each other on the basis of their any similar feature. Its a way to describe a thing and envisions the reader regarding the particular thing. Metaphors also make the writing interesting and builds imaginations in the minds of the readers. For example, if the poet says that his beloved is as beautiful as a rose, then it is a metaphor.
