Capulet gives a feast, in order to allow Paris, kinsman of Escalus Prince of Verona, to woo his daughter Juliet. Benvolio hears of this through a servant, and persuades Romeo, and their friend Mercutio, to "gatecrash" the feast, which they do, wearing masks. Romeo glimpses Juliet as she is dancing, and, removes his mask to get a better look. He is recognised by Tybalt, Juliet's kinsman, who enraged at the audacity of Romeo, seeks him out to kill! Romeo, meanwhile, has disappeared in the swirl of the feast, oblivious to Tybalt's anger. Later, Tybalt chances upon Benvolio and Mercutio in the street and demands to meet Romeo. Mercutio argues with him, which leads to a violent street fight, with Mercutio being killed! Just then, Romeo appears, and seeing his friend dead, fights viciously with Tybalt, killing him! Romeo is banished to Mantua by Prince Escalus. The play continues. The final quote, from Escalus, comes after his admonishing of the two powerful families, "Some shall be pardoned, and some punish'ed: For never was a story of more woe, Than this of Juliet and her Romeo". The Chorus, or narrator, opens with "Two families, both alike in dignity: In fair Verona where we lay our scene: From ancient grudge break to new mutiny:Where civil blood makes civil hands unclean".
