At the age of seven, Shakespeare attended the King's School, Stratford-upon-Avon, until his father withdrew him from education to learn his trade as a whittawer,( worker in white kid leather). Being the son of an Alderman, and ex-Mayor of the town, Skakespeare was afforded what today would be called a classical education, that is the learning of Latin and Greek, by rote, that would stand him in good stead for a university degree. All English universities at the time, dealt solely in 3 subjects, Law, Medicine and the Church. Fortunately, Shakespeare was not to avail himself of either of these, and England got, instead, a playwright of all time.
