A conservative estimate, at the time of Elizabeth Tudor's death,(1603), would put some 200,000 people in and around London by then. There were only three cities in the whole of England with more than 10,000, yet London held 20 times as many. The reasons are Political, Economical and Social. Throughout her life, Elizabeth had to contend with an unfriendly Europe. Unfriendly with regard to her Protestant faith in England, against the Roman Catholic faith in Europe. Therefore, she faced many enemies, not least the Jesuit clergy, who, with permission from the Pope, attempted to murder her at every opportunity. Frances Walsingham, her Spymaster General, employed a virtual army of spies and informants throughout the whole of Europe, engaged in keeping him and his lieutenents up to date with everything going on as regards the Queen's safety. Along with this, England was emerging from a backward, illiterate nation into a forward looking, confident assembly, crossing the bridge from Medieval to modern society. Great scientific discoveries were being made and, coupled with a publishing boom, many learnt to read and write almost overnight. Meanwhile a powerful merchant class was trading far beyond England's shores, and in a remarkably short time, England emerged as a potential world power.

There are two possible answers he either got into trouble poaching deer on the estate of Sir Thomas Lucy at Charlecote, three miles out of stratford. Or he was running away from his wife Anne Hathaway(she was eight years older than him).
