William Shakespeare was well known for his sonnets, many of which had love as the main theme. There were 154 sonnets that he wrote in total and 152 of them were published in 'Shakespeare's Sonnets' in 1609, and the other two sonnets were published previously in 'The Passionate Pilgrim' in 1599.

In addition to his sonnets, he also wrote a number of other poems, which were longer.

In 'Shakespeare's Sonnets' some of the sonnets are actually a parody of some of the themes he covers, such as love and beauty. In 'The Passionate Pilgrim', number 138 and number 144 out of his collection of 150 sonnets appear.

One of Shakespeare's sonnets, (sonnet 18) is one of the more famous sonnets, and has been featured in many films such as 'Shakespeare in Love' and 'Clueless'. The line 'Rough Winds do shake the darling buds of May' was also an inspiration, as the television programme 'The Darling Buds of May' took its name from this line.

A sonnet is a poem with fourteen lines. Generally the theme changes a little after line eight. It means that the first eight lines have one theme while the last six lines, the them of the poem gets a little different. Sonnets are usually written in iambic pentameter. Iambic pentameter means that each line of the sonnet has 10 syllables and accents fall on every second syllable in each line.

Sonnets were first written in Italy and later on English writers adopted them too. They are lyrical poems.

William Shakespeare, the greatest poet of all times, is supposed to have written more than one hundred and fifty sonnets. However, nobody knows for sure how many sonnets did he exactly write as the authorship of the sonnets is disputed. His sonnets were first published in 1609 in the books "the sonnets of the Bard". However, it was claimed by Shakespeare that the publisher did not acquire his permission for publishing these sonnets. Nobody knows for sure, how many of these sonnets were actually written by Shakespeare and how many were added by the publisher.

There are one hundred and fifty four sonnets that appear under the authorship of Shakespeare though nobody is really sure about their actual authorship. In fact, the identity of William Shakespeare himself is somewhat of a mystery. Not much is known about him.
