Shakespeare is one of the greatest artists of this century. He is a renown poet and a playwright. He is titled as the national poet of England due to his services to poetry and literature.

He wrote around 38 plays in his lifetime. Most of these plays have been translated and staged in other languages of the world.

His most famous plays include:
- Macbeth
- Julius Ceaser
- Romeo and Juliet
- Midsummer Night's Dream
- Merchant of Venice

We will never know! He is reputed to have written some 38 plays, but, as a new play was presented every day! On the London stage, it is a safe bet to assume Shakespeare wrote more than the number he is credited with. After 'the play' had been acted, it was literally forgotten about, as the cast got on with the next one, meaning, all the paper, parchment and vellum used to write down the words, were either thrown away, or re-used,(Vellum) in a manner known as a Palimpsest, re- written over.

A contemporary of Shakespeare's, John Haywood, is reputed to have written 200 plays! This puts the number written by Shakespeare in dispute, surely?  Two of his plays, Cardenio and Love's Labours Won, were thought to have been lost, however definite proof of the latter was discovered in 1953! Other plays written by him, often had additions made by other playwrights, who would then claim the writing credit!  So, I believe Shakespeare wrote far more than the measly 38 plays he is attributed with.
