Once you have gathered some information on family members with date's etc. you then need to start mapping this out in chronological order. The most common and easiest is a "drop line chart". With this method you keep each generation on the same level and always put the males like husband's and father's on the left with females on their right.
With children however do not put boys first but place them in order of oldest to the left whatever sex they are. Always show children linked to both parents and not just from the male line. Put any multiple marriages in date order left to right and always write the marriage details under the woman's name.
Put any dates of birth and death under the individual's name and even if you do not have the full date it is always worthwhile to put the year in the short term.
