I am a Technology Graduate student major with my last two courses under Professor Childress, and I am writing to you to appeal the dismissal and be reinstated into the Graduate Program.  I feel given all information about my situation with proper respect and understanding that you will come to the conclusion that I deserve to be in this Graduate Program. On February 2, 2009, my wife and I adopted a two year little girl.  Unbeknownst to us she would be given back to her biological mother in October 2009.  This put a huge strain on me personally and my marriage.  I felt as though my life was falling apart and there was nothing I could do.  But still I continue to attend my life long dream of pursuing my master’s degree.  My wife during the beginning of September was very ill; doctors kept giving her medicine and no one could diagnose that she had H1N1 virus until almost collapsing in the office, she was then diagnosed and put in the hospital for about two weeks.  Later, dealing with my fight with the influenza for a few weeks, but still being the persistent person I am, I still wanted to do my best.  These were all trails in my life dealing with almost losing my wife and then her rehabilitation and over turned adoption.  But still I new that I had to continue to complete my degree with my eyes set on December 2010 graduation.  I knew I could survive anything and keep pressing forward.  I have enclosed the medical documents regarding my wife’s stay at Wesley Long Hospital along with this letter.  Due to the nature of an adoption which is private, I could get a letter from my attorney if needed it for consideration.
Because of this setback, I have not been the model student that I had been in the past.  But with consideration of the heart felt moments that have happened in a span of four months, it took some of my passion away.  With my wife, it was four months of just trying to get back to where she was before her illness and then dealing with my only child being taken away from us.  I ask you to please look at my history here in this program and my grade point average.  I can retain my grades this semester and maintain a great standard in this program.  I am requesting to be readmitted into this great program.  With all this said there is no way anyone could have been able to produce the expected output considering my unusual condition.
I feel that the situation is not warranted because I have maintained at GPA of 3.0 or higher.   Therefore, the risk of me failing or making marks below and preventing me from completing my four courses left in the program and from graduating because of an unavoidable circumstance is unacceptable. The handbook states as follows “A cumulative grade point average of 3.0 (B) is required for graduation.  A department shall recommend courses in which the grades of “B” or better will be required.  Effective fall 2004, “A student who accumulates nine or more semester hours of grades below “B” shall be dismissed.  When a student’s grade point average (GPA) falls below 3.0, he/she will be warned and informed that he/she must raise the GPA to 3.0 or better within the next nine semester hours.  Students failing to do so will be dismissed from the School of Graduate Studies and no further registration in a graduate classification will be permitted.”
North Carolina Agricultural and Technical State University has a unique legacy of nurturing individual students to realize their fullest potential.  Please help me to continue to do just that, with continuing in this great Graduate Program.

The unforeseen medical situation and the turned around adoption all prevented me from continuing to be an excelling student; these situations were all beyond my control. I would ask you to grant me another opportunity to stay in the Graduate Program. I look forward to meeting with you to discuss this matter. Feel free to call me with any questions at 843-862-7915.  I appreciate the time that you have taken to read my appeal.
Sincerely,
