It is also called rising action. Traditionally, a story can be categorized in 5 phases. The first one is called exposition, giving background of story, setting in time and place, and introducing conflicts of the story. The second stage, complication, is when conflicts are intensified and then it leads to the third stage, called either crisis or climax, where the major character has to make a decision and this is also known as a point of no return and then the story is moving toward the fourth stage, known as falling action, which is so short or none in some story. The last phase is the resolution where equilibrium is apparent and all conflicts are solved or the protagonist is defeated.
