To The Cuckoo was written by William Wordsworth in 1802 and published in 1807. It is one of Wordsworth's lesser-known poems, but here are some of the facts and analysis of the themes contained in the piece:
The poem has a regular ABAB rhyme scheme and consists of 8 uniform stanzas. The delivery is of Wordsworth addressing the cuckoo directly.
The themes dealt with are nostalgia and the past- Wordsworth is recalling his childhood memories which are triggered by the cry of the cuckoo; and also nature, Wordsworth revealing the romanticism he feels for the countryside and his surroundings which is in contrast to the industrialisation of the world around him at the time that the poem was written.
