Writing a letter to donate money to charity does not necessarily need to be done formally but if you would like a formal, professional looking letter you should write it in a business letter format. Put your name and your address in the top right-hand corner and the person’s name and address whom you are writing to on the left hand side, below your address. Then place the date and begin the letter either ‘Dear Sir’, or ‘Dear Madam’, or if you know their name, ‘Dear Mr or Mrs......’.
You may want to begin your first paragraph by introducing yourself and explain that you would like to donate money to their charity. In the second paragraph explain what it is about their charity that made you decide that you would like to contribute. It may be the fact that they do a fantastic job, they may provide care for a loved one or may have provided an excellent service for a loved one who has passed away. You may be interested in something they are researching or simply believe that they are working towards a good cause and wish to help.
In your third paragraph you may wish to include anything specific that you would like the money to go towards. If it is a charity that you have been involved with or felt the benefit of, you may understand the ins and outs of the charity, how it works and particular areas they invest their money in. If this is the case, you may be able to specify where your money goes. If you are interested in helping the charity in any other way, such as volunteering and offering your time and help, this would be a good place to put it.
If you are writing a cheque, it would be a good idea to call ahead and ask who to make the cheque out to. Never send cash in the post and if you are not sending a cheque, it would be a good idea to ask how they would like to receive the money.
At the end of the letter, you may wish to leave your contact telephone number in case the charity wish to contact you regarding the transfer of money.
