Catching Fire is the second novel in the Hunger Games Trilogy, and is the sequel to the 2008 bestseller The Hunger Games; it continues the story of Katniss Everdeen and the fictional, futuristic nation of Panem. After the events of the previous novel a rebellion against the ruling Capitol has begun, and Katniss and fellow tribute Peeta are forced to return to the arena in a special edition of The Hunger Games.

This Science Fiction novel was first released in September 2009, and has since been released in both audio book and eBook format, thus expanding its accessibility. The predominant themes that structure the novel are survival, government control, rebellion and interdependence vs. Independence. As the second novel in this futuristic trilogy, it has already been subject to major success has become highly acclaimed by Science Fiction fans and critics alike, who have praised Collins for her sophisticated character development of the main protagonist, Katniss. The third and final novel in The Hunger Games trilogy is Mokingjay, which was finally released with much bated breath on 24th August 2010.

Collin’s Catching Fire though set in the fictional country Panem, is supposedly a country within North America, whose capitol is submerged within the mountainous terrain of the Rockies. Katniss’s home town is called District 12, giving the novel an almost compound feel, is located in the coal-rich Appalachian region. In totality there are 12 Districts in Panem, but the narrator informs us that there was once a 13th which was ultimately destroyed during the great rebellion. The Hunger Games itself takes place in a stadium specially built for the event, it is an event that takes place annually, shrouded in secrecy and mystery, its location remains unknown.
