The overall meaning is that to be a really good and therefore holy person, it is more important to love other people than anything else. THe angel in the poem appears to be concerned with asking whether people are religious, but in fact it turns out that God is not concerned with that: Ben Adhem loves his fellow men, and this is what God wants him to do rather than following the forms of religion. The idea, I think, is that 'holiness' or goodness is a human quality and we should look for and love the goodness in humans rather than turning to ideas of an abstract holiness outside ourselves. Hope this helps.

This poem Abou Ben Ad-hem is written English poet James Henry Leigh Hunt. The central idea of this poem is that God love those who loves their fellow men. Love of fellow men is the best type of worship. Abou Ben Ad-hem's name was top of the list of those, who love their fellowmen.

The poem perfectly set forth the message in Mathew 25:30-46. The way to serve God is to serve your fellow men.Summarized,it says "Come you that are blessed by the Lord.Whenever you fed your brothers, you did it also for me."

Abou ben Adam is not poem with regular rhyme scheme.its theme is that"We should love god,but we should love god by loving our people". This poem starts as abou ben Adam wakes up from a deep dream of sleep and with a little description of his room.It is said as 'moonlight of his room Making it rich, and like a lily in bloom',Then the poet talks about the presence(The angle),which was writing in  a book of gold 'The names of those who love the Lord'.and The exceeding peace had make Adam bold.
Adam asked the the vision "What writ-est thou?" (What are you writing) then it said
"I am wring the names of those who love god, which made Adam ask the angle if his name is too present in the book of all sweet accord, but it wasn't..
This didn't make abou sad but Abou spoke more low,But cheerily still,He said""I pray thee, then, Write me as one who loves his fellow men."The angel wrote, and vanished.
It came again the next day with a great awakening light,And showed the names whom love of God had blest,And what a surprise Ben Adam's name led all the rest.

The overall meaning of this poem conveys us to be a good person in life and keep helping others. The poem spells out the golden values in world. Abou Ben Adhem seems to be concerned with what is the angel writing in that particular book of gold. When he comes to know that it is writing the names of those who love the god, he goes and questions the angel about if his name is there in the list or not.

When the angel answers it negative, he is not depressed at all. He again says write my name in the list of those who love his fellowmen. The next night when the angel comes back again it shows Ben Adhem the list of those whom the love of god had blessed. To his surprise his name led the rest.

This poem also recites that there are such people in the world who still have faith in god and by the name of god they keep on helping others. it spells out the meaning "Service to man is service to god".

It was important to Abu Ben Adam that he was loved by others God primarily. But When he asked the angel writing in the book of life if his name was in it as one much love ,the angel said it was not. Discouraged he ask the angel to enter his name as one who loved mankind. This please God so much that He wrote A.B.A. At the top of the list. Meaning loving others is high on God,s list
