Tybalt, a kinsman of Escalus, Prince of Verona, meets Benvolio, Mercutio and Romeo out in the street, after Capulet's feast. He gets into an argument with Mercutio, and goads him into drawing his rapier. The two fight, but Romeo steps between them to stop them. As he successfully pulls them apart, Tybalt sneakily lunges at Mercutio under Romeo's arm and wounds him mortally. Mercutio dies, "A plague o' both your houses!". Then, Romeo, mortified at the death of his kinsman, draws his rapier and fights with Tybalt, killing him! Just then Escalus appears, and banishes Romeo to Mantua.
