The Harry Potter series of books written by British author J.K. Rowling have been acclaimed as one of the most popular children's books ever published. The first book in the series entitled as 'Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone' was published by Bloomsbury and released on June 26, 1997 in the UK; it was released in the US in September 1998 by Scholastic who changed the title of the book and named it as Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone as the publishers felt the word philosopher would not suit the title of a book for kids.

The book introduces Harry to the readers as well as being Harry's introduction to the world of magic when he learns on his eleventh birthday that he is a wizard and has been invited to attend Hogwarts, a school for wizards and witches. The book has sold more than 70 million copies world wide and has been translated in 66 languages up till now; the book was made in to a film of the same name and released in November 2001 which became the fourth highest grossing film of all time earning $976 million.

The original title is Harry Potter and this Philosopher's Stone.  It is not just British.  The Spanish, German and Italian copies all use the same name among many others.  The US title of the book is Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone which was changed with the consent of J.K. Rowling by the publisher as they felt that many Americans would not know what a Philosopher is because they deemed it a British word.  They also felt it did not fit a children's book.  The American edition also changes words like 'mum' to 'mom'.

When filming the movie they had to film each bit where they mentioned the Philosopher's Stone again and say Sorcerer's Stone for the American release.
