When Shakespeare was born in 1564, Elizabeth the first was on the throne.  She was succeeded by James I in 1603. The hygiene in London was very bad and the population was a large amount as it was the capital of England. Life when Shakespeare was around was not one of the best of times to be alive. Things were very tough and not so easy. People were struggling for money and had to live in mostly 1 room unless you were very rich, and then you would  probably  have more than1 room.

It was very dificult for poor people, they had no clothes and no food to eat, also they were very dirty! The rich people had beautiful and enormous houses  and they use expensive cloth and they eat meat that in that time it was very expensive because it was difficult to find, but they were very dirty too!! Everyone threw their rubbish, dirty water and sewage into the gutter, because of that London was a very smelly place.

Elegant for the rich, hard for the poor.
It was very dirty in england, and many people were ill or poor. Those who were rich would have had the highst quality life they could afford but there were very few rich people around compared to the amount of poor.

There were four kinds of social classes that is nobility, Gentry, Yeoman and the poor. The lifestyle of the people depended either upon their inheritance or a grant from the monarch. The nobles were the ones who had the best of food, dresses, habits and manners and they were the ones with the highest ranks in the society.

In those times, the concept of propriety was very important for both males and females. Ranks and inheritance were given a lot of importance and marriages were done for inheritances, ranks and social position.

The time period in which Shakespeare was there was the Elizabeth era and the time of Renaissance. This was the time of scientific and artistic revolution all over Europe. The social classes changed, the kind of food consumed also changed. The clothes changed and the sources of entertainment of people also became different. There were advancements in navigation and new trade routes were determined.

Nasty, dirty and squalid!  Infested, plague ridden and polluted!  Murderous, arcane and politically dangerous!  Just a few phrases that spring to mind when reviewing Shakespeare's London life!
