It's basically about black rights. It was written in the 20's in America when racism was strong, and Langston Hughes was a black man struggling with discrimination and segregation.
The first line of the poem, “I, too, sing America,” pretty much sums up the poem. It means that even though he is an African AMerican, he is still an American, and he sings the American national anthem just the same that white people do, so why should he be treated any differently?
