George Elliot was really Mary Ann (or Marion) Evans.
She was born in 1819 in Warwickshire but was of Welsh ancestry.
Her father was born at Ellaston in 1773 in Staffordshire but her grandfather George Evans originally came from Northop in Flintshire.
Her first considerable work was 'Scenes of Clerical Life'.
This appeared in Blackwood in 1854. The work was said to blend reality with the power of her imagination and was claimed to be one of the powers of her writing.
Adam Bede followed in 1859 and The Mill on the Floss in 1860. In 1861 Silas Marner was published.
She wrote a number of other novels and poems and was claimed as a leading novelist of the time.
She died in May 1880 and was buried at Highgate cemetery in London.
Her 'Life' , edited by J.W Cross, was published in three volumes in 1884.
