I also agree that jade can be hard to identify. Jade comes in many colours (green is the most popular but it also comes in blue, red, orange, lavender, yellow and black).Jade can also be translucent to opaque. There are a few ways to identify jade. First of all jade (both varieties; nephrite and jadeite) is harder than steel. This means that steel can not scratch jade. So get a steel knife and scrape it across the jade. Once you do this get a cloth (cotton is most common) and buff the piece. If it is jade than you will not see any scratch marks and commonly you will see a metallic residue left behind by the knife. The stone (jade) scratched the steel!Another way to identify jade it through its "depth". Jade is a precious stone because it is said to have a life of its own. Jade can be seen "into" if it is not over-polished (yes, jade can be over-polished. The Chinese believed that if you over-polished jade you could no longer see into the stone and only saw a reflection in it).Another way to identify jade by the sound it makes. When two pieces of jade are hit together they will make a high pitched ringing sound. Those are just a few ways to determine if a stone is actually jade. You can find more information over at What is Jade.Hope that helps!

Jade is actually a colour which actually depicts a colour of saturated bluish green. This colour gets its name from the gem named jade but this stone is actually found in shades of blue. This gemstone has a lot of symbolic significance in different cultures and religions. It is an ornamental stone which is made of two different silicate minerals known as Nephrite and jadeite. This word jade is derived from a Spanish term known as piedra de ijada and was first recorded in 1565.

This stone is known to man from the Stone Age. At those times it was used for making tools for hunting such as axe heads, knives and other weapons. Later on this material was also used for ornamental and decorative purposes. There are different types of jades and they are worth according to their colour which can be decided by jewellers and gems experts.

Jade comes in different varieties of green and blue. You could say it was either, but in my opinion, it's more green.

Each color of jade represents slightly different things.

The most common color of jade is green, which represents the Confucian virtues of wisdom, compassion, modesty, justice and courage.

Confucius explained how the Chinese viewed jade by explaining how:

“The wise have likened jade to virtue. For them, its polish and brilliancy represent the whole of purity; its perfect compactness and extreme hardness represent the sureness of intelligence; its angles, which do not cut, although they seem sharp, represent justice; the pure and prolonged sound, which it gives forth when one strikes it, represents music. Its color represents loyalty; its interior flaws, always showing themselves through the transparency, call to mind sincerity; its iridescent brightness represents heaven; its admirable substance, born of mountain and of water, represents the earth. Used alone without ornamentation it represents chastity. The price that the entire world attaches to it represents the truth. To support these comparisons, the Book of Verse says: ‘When I think of a wise man, his merits appear to be like jade.’”

A great page to read about jade is about the Metaphysical qualities of Jade. You can also find a list of colors at this site which give you an idea of what each color represents.

There is no sure way of identifying it exactly unless you take it in to a gemologist. However, do know that Jade can be of two types: Jadeite and Nephrite. Jadeite comes in the beautiful green you usually associate any Jade with and is the most expensive of the two coming mainly out of Burma & Guatemala. Its the "higher end" Jade if you will. If this is what you are being sold/ or are curious about be wary of very cheap prices for this type of Jade. If it sounds too good to be true it probably is. Some questionable companies will take Nephrite Jade (the cheaper, more abundant Jade found in the Xinjiang Province in China) and dye it to make it look like Jadeite. Rule of thumb, the Jade being sold is of the Nephrite type, unless you are purchasing it from a reliable, high end jewellery store. Do not pay a lot of money unless you are absolutely certain.
