The novel 'Les Miserables' one of the epoch making pieces of literature of the 19th century was written by the world renowned French poet and intellectual Victor Hugo (1802-1885). Les Miserables (1862) which means The Miserable Ones or The Wretched is a novel which along with being an absorbing story about the life of Jean Valjean, an ex convict who is of philanthropic temperament and his struggles to redeem himself of the past is also a social commentary on French society of the early 19th century.
In the novel Hugo presents his views on the social scenario depicting the condition of the downtrodden section of the society in a vivid manner. Hugo during his lifetime essayed different roles while being a prolific contributor to literature as a poet, novelist and dramatist was a competent artist and was also active in the social and political sphere where he was recognised as a statesman of the first degree, an ardent supporter of human rights.
