Before you sit down to compose your letter here are some things to consider before you ask your employer for a cash advance.

  • Have you got a good history with the company?  Nobody is going to lend you a penny if you're not a good, steady employee who has been at the company for some time - I would say at least 1 year
  • Have you got in your head the figure you need advanced?  And have you got a genuine reason for asking?
  • Have you got an idea how much you will have to pay back and over how long? And do you know if interest will be added?

Ok - now always remember when writing a letter - handwritten is best but only if you have excellent handwriting - othewise do it on a word processor.  Get someone who knows how to spell and use good grammar to check it out.  Never trust a spell check!  Here is a sample letter you could adapt.

Mr John Smith

Ref: Cash adance on salary

Dear Mr Smith

My name is Henry Jones and I work in the mail room of Smith Tools.  I have been with the company for 3 years and 2 months and enjoy my work.  I am a good and concientious worker and get on well with my fellow workers and my line manager.

Just this week I have been faced with a major problem in my family.  My mother has been diagnosed with a serious illness and needs urgent medical help.  I am her only child and she turned to me for assistance.  The treatment she requires will cost $4, 500 dollars.  I have a litte savings but no where near enough to meet this amount.

I am therefore asking you to consider advancing me $4000 dollars immediately which will allow me to pay the medical bill for my mother's treatment.  I realise that this is a considerable amount, but I am convinced that I can pay this back to you over the next year and a half.

If you are in agreement, then the money could be deducted from my monthly salary. My wife and I are sure we will be able to manage on a reduced salary for this time.  I am prepared to follow any guidlines you have in place.

I would ask you to give this your consideration at your earliest convenience and look forward to hearing from you soon.

Yours faithfully

Henry Jones

As I said you can add, change anything - just follow the guidelines and it should be fine.
