Your machine may just need a cleaning/lubrication. My wife has a similar machine that had a very similar problem. Her stitch selection switch would rotate through all of the stitches, but the machine would randomly select a stitch, but would never get back to a straight stitch. I disassembled the plastic covers from the machine and removed as much dirt/lint as I could easily access. I rotated the stitch selector and and saw what it did. What I found was that when the selector dial is rotated from stitch selection 1 (straight stitch) through to stitch 12, there is an arm that is pushed along a rod. When the dial is rotated back down to the straight stitch it relies on a spring to return it back through the stitches. I lubricated the rod (as well as any others I could access since I had the machine apart) with sewing machine oil and manually moved the arm along the rod while rotating the stitch selector dial. I did this back and forth a few times until the arm moved freely and returned on its own. Total time was about and hour (including figuring out how to disassemble the machine).
Now I have a very happy wife.
Was pretty simple, but would recommend if you are not mechanically inclined to have it done professionally.
Hope this helps.
