Most books belong in one of two broad categories: Fiction or non-fiction. However, blends of the two also exist, including hybrid genres such as creative non-fiction and semi-fiction.
What is Fiction?
Fiction is the name given to a piece of literature that isn't true: The emphasis tends to be on good story-telling and entertainment value rather than accuracy and truth. To put it simply, a piece of fiction is a story that's imaginary or made-up. Popular forms of fiction include the novel and the short story.
What is Non-Fiction?
The main goal of non-fiction is to inform or instruct the reader. Non-fiction usually takes the form of a biography, reference book, piece of travel-writing or cookbook. The emphasis here is on the truth: What is written is taken to be accurate and trustworthy. Where fiction is made up, non-fiction is often heavily researched and based on fact.
What if a Book is Based on a True Story?
Then this would be semi-fiction; or, in the case of the Titanic movie, historical fiction. This means that the situation, events and/or historical context are true, but the characters and plot are either made up or based very loosely on reality. Like fiction, semi-fiction is more interested in entertaining the reader than informing them.
What is Creative Non-Fiction?
Creative non-fiction is non-fiction that uses literary devices and techniques to create a factually or historically accurate narrative. Essentially, creative non-fiction is non-fiction that reads like a story rather than a reference book. Memoirs, food-writing and travel-writing often (but not always) fall into this category.
