Robert Frost describes how life was back in the 18th century, on a farm scene, where all members of the family were expected to work, and when the boy dies, and the family continues with callousness as if the boy never existed, if signifies that the family had to keep working to get by in life, and couldn't spend too much time mourning the loss of their son.
