This is an autobiographical poem .in this poem the poet reaches a particular point when he is to make a decision At a particular point two roads diverge in the wood.( the two roads refer to two career options) The poet keeps thinking about his choice.Later he decides to travel upon the second road i.e. The road that was less traveled by the people as he felt that he might be successful This indicates that he decided to be a writer and a poet. This career option was not chosen by many people.Initially he wanted to experience both and travel on both the roads but being a single traveler he could not do so.He decides to travel on the first road later in his life though he was aware of the fact that one cannot travel on two roads at a time. The symbolic meaning is that one can experience one career at a time.He was aware that if he would travel on a particular road he would move ahead and never turn back but still he kept the first option for another day.Initially he was not successful as a poet but later he became a renowned poet. Thus towards the end he says that ,that has made all the difference. He was successful in a totally different field. .

His poem means choosing your path. One path is doing it everyone else's way and the other path is your own way. He chose to go his own way. It is another metaphor for life.
