No, Shakespeare in Love is not a true story. It is a film with Gwyneth Paltrow and Joseph Fiennes and although there are many references to real people and events and issues, the film makes no attempt as precise to accuracy of time or people.

Of course there was a man named Will Shakespeare who was married to an older woman who lived in Stratford, he may well have had an affair with someone else but there is no proof of this although some of his sonnets point us to this fact and sometimes point us to a boy or man too.

The film many real characters of course, Queen Elizabeth I, Richard Burbage (who had a rival company), Kit or Christopher Marlowe, a fellow playwright, more successful and famous in Elizabethan England.

The film won seven Oscars and took a long time and many writers to come to fruition.

The film comes very close to the mark.
There WAS someone called Elizabeth 1 for instance, but she never went to the theatre, the theatre went to her!
There WAS a playwright called Christopher Marlowe, (Rupert Everett), but he could hardly have discussed Mercutio with Shakespeare, as he was murdered in 1593, and Romeo and Juliet was written in 1596!
There WAS an actor called Edward Alleyn, (Ben Affleck), but he worked exclusively for Philip Henslowe, (Geoffrey Rush), and Marlowe at the 'Rose' on Bankside.
The 'money' was not Tom Wilkenshaw, (Mr Fentiman), the money came from the Privy Council.
Gwyneth Paltrow would not have been permitted to act, under any circumstances whatsoever, the stage was a 'man' thing!
The Earl of Wessex, (Colin Firth) did not exist!
Basically, the film DOES hold to the concept of a Shakespearen play. To the committed student however, many 'mistakes' can be detected.
