What Is The Setting For Daniel Defoe's "Moll Flanders"?
The full title of this novel is "The Fortunes and Misfortunes of the Famous Moll Flanders." Published in 1722, it tells, in her own words, the life story of a woman who has been "a whore", "a thief" "a wife (once to her own brother)" and finally "a penitent." It may be based on a real-life thief and prostitute, but Moll's energy and matter-of-fact humour are Defoe's creation.
She is born in Newgate, and left a foundling when her mother is transported for theft. Brought up by a well-off family, she is seduced by a son of the house and embarks on a career of prostitution, theft and serial marriage. Her goal is always security and respectability, which keeps eluding her; one husband turns out to be her brother, another is discovered to have deceived her about his wealth (as she deceived him about hers.)
Eventually she is transported for theft and goes to Virginia, where she is reunited with her mother and finds prosperity and happiness at last.
