To produce a letter to a bank requesting that an ATM card be canceled is a simple process, and there are certain things that will be needed within the letter:

• Account number
The account number is required so that the bank can be sure to cancel the correct card. This is a vital element within any correspondence with the bank.

• Routing number
The routing number will enable the bank to cancel the card quicker, as the routing number is specific to a branch of any bank. These numbers are referred to as sort codes in the United Kingdom.

• Name and address of account holder
The name and address of the account holder should also be provided, as proof of identity, and provide a useful way of cross-referencing details.

• Reasons for canceling card
There could be a number of reasons that somebody wants to cancel the card, from leaving the bank to open a new account elsewhere, to losing a card.

The letter should always be addressed to the bank manager and sent to the branch where the majority of the banking was done. The account number should be bolded within the letter and the letter could be written as follows:

Could you please ensure that you cancel the ATM card for the account in the name of (insert name of account holder here). This is due to the card becoming misplaced. The account number in question is (insert account number here), and the routing number is (insert routing number here). I do not require a new card as I am now working abroad. Please could you respond to this letter to confirm that this has been done?

The letter should be signed and dated, and the last sentence of the letter is vital, as the bank will inform you when the card has been canceled and you will not need to worry about it falling into the wrong hands.
