To be able to read a plot plan, you need to be able to translate the measurements on the plan to real sizes. To do this you need to find out what size scale the plans have been made to, and then multiply the two figures that have been given that so that you have a realistic measurement, and know exactly what size your building is going to be.

A plot plan is a thoroughly comprehensive drawing of the site location for a new building, very often new homes so that there is no doubt as to the location of property boundaries, topography or the house layout.

The dimensions of a plot plan are usually recorded by a surveyor and are used to determine where the house will stand in relation to the entire lot. Utility services, easements, driveways and paths, and set back requirements will all be set out on a plot plan.

In some instances, the surveyor will also include a topographical map so that the architect or builder will have critical information on the land, including any features that have to be taken into account, such as slopes, for the place where the house is going to be built.

Plot plans are not usually included when you buy stock floor plans because they have been produced based on the exact size and dimensions of the house that is to be built, and of its lot location. However, if you have chosen your lot and now you want plot plans, you can have them drawn up by an architect, an engineer, or by a draftsman. Naturally, you will need to do some homework so that you know exactly what it is that you want so that you can communicate that effectively to whoever you give the job to.
