'The Voice' is a short story that was written by the British author V.S. Pritchett. The story was published in 1945 as part of Pritchett's collection of stories entitled 'It May Never Happen'.

The story is based on life during World War Two and is typical of much of Pritchett's work in that it goes beyond external events (such as the ongoing war) and focuses in instead on the deeper psychological make-up of its key characters. After the opening few pages, the war is more or less left in the background as Pritchett elaborates upon the key characters of the story.

The overall tone of 'The Voice' is mildly satirical and also uses a lot of vivid language, poetic expression and elaborate adjectives to tell the story. As with most of Pritchett's work, the story focuses on the lives of lower middle class people.

Sir Victor Sawdon Pritchett was a British writer and critic. He was born in Ipswich, Suffolk on 16 December 1900 and died on 20 March 1997 at the age of 96. He was most well known for writing short stories, although he also wrote a large number of essays on literary biography and criticism. He also wrote the famous non-fiction works 'A Cab at the Door' in 1968 and 'Midnight Oil' in 1971. Pritchett was knighted in 1975 for his services to literature.

VS Pritchett won a number of different prizes throughout his career in honor of his work. These included the following:

• The Heinemann Award (1969)
• PEN Award (1974)
• WH Smith Literary Award (1990)
• The Golden Pen Award (1993)
