Scarlet fever didn't directly end Beth's life. I've done some research and it looks like she must have developed rheumatic fever, which can damage the heart and cause congestive heart failure, a condition in which the heart gets weaker and weaker until it simply gives out.   Beth is described as suffering from weariness, which is consistent with her heart not being able to deliver enough blood to her body.

The book isn't specific about the exact cause of her death but she's never strong again after being ill with scarlet fever. I suspect, based on the symptoms described in the story, that she developed rheumatic fever, which weakens the heart muscle and could result in the heart being in too weakened condition to deliver oxygen throughout the body effectively.
