A convention is a drama element. They are things that aren't realistic, but are accepted by the audience on stage. Most things on stage are conventions, such as cross cutting, thought tracking or even scene changes. The reason they are not "realistic" is because you wouldn't suddenly freeze in real life and change the surroundings from a living room to the park, for example. Hope this helps!
