Maya Angelou is a popular American memoirist and also a poet. She has been titled as the America's most visible female autobiographer. She was born in the year 1928 in Saint Louis, Missouri. She is not only a poet but also a film and Television producer, playwright, film director, actress and an author.

Her best known contributions to literature are her series of six autobiographies. The best known of which is titled as I know Why the Caged bird sings. She was also an active member of the civil rights movement., She served as the Northern coordinator of Dr. Martin Luther King. In fact it was his assassination that motivated her to write her first autobiography.

She has taught at the Wake Forest University since 1991. Her services are of immense importance to the whole American nation especially the African Americans.
