Why Was The Witches By Roald Dahl Banned?

There are several reasons and "opinions" as to why this book was banned but in summary the main reasons were:

- the use of sterotypes for woman.
- it didn't create any distinction between witches and people that were "nice".
- it apparently "devalued" the life of a child.
- Witchcraft in the book was taken lightly.

Roald Dahl was critisized in England by feminists for being sexist and witch "groups" in the United States for his negative portrayal of them.

I guess you could say that ultimately it was banned for it's apparent careless treatment of social issues.

Absolutely outragousPathetic! To ban this book. My daughter is fascinated and spellbound by Roald Dahl an amazing man who's magical talent for tapping into a childs mind inspiring their imagination is second to none.  This man including this book it entirely responsible for inspiring my 8 year old to go onto write her own stories. Let alone the hunger she has to have any Roalld Dahl story read to her.  To all those critics out there! - My daughter is quite capable of separating reality from fantasy and not comparing life to a fairy tale perhaps if you had more of an imagination you would be too. And! Not so tunnel visioned!  You simply forgot how to have fun! If you see any wrong in such a wonderful world of escapism - I love the time I spend with my little girl laughing and gasping as I read Raold Dahl to her

I think it  is absolutely pathetic to ban the book. I truly enjoy the book and think it Is one of Roald Dahl's greatest literary works.

This book was banned because:

1. It was, at the time, considered too violent.

2. It was stereotyping women as "witches"

3. It caused children to "misbehave"

I am a third grade teacher and use this book in my reading groups. It is a fun and FICTION! One of my favorite books of his.

I'm currently reading The Witches to my class and they LOVE it. It certainly is terrifying and violent....which is why kids love it. Lots of terrific vocab for children too. When was it banned?

I love this book and why it we challenged is stupid but evry book is challenged now days
