Biography is a story about a person's life depicting his/her impersonal life like work, education and death etc and the experience the person underwent during that time. It covers all of that person's life and is written by a third person. Biography is usually a published account in the form of a book or a movie.

On the other hand, an autobiography is a story about a person's life written by the person him or herself. The prefix 'auto' stands for 'self' and hence its meaning is very clear in the word 'autobiography' itself. Famous
autobiographies include the ones written by Mahatma Gandhi and the Queen of England.

Whereas for "autobiography" you'll see:

While writing a biography, the writer seeks to find as much information about the concerned person. He does an extensive homework, interviews the person on whom the biography is being written, does a background study of the person-basically everything that can cover the person in entirety. A biography may either be impartial or biased in terms of content.

A biography of one self, written by that person only is called autobiography. The first forms of autobiographies began to surface in the 16th century. Usually things which a person writes while in solitary confinement in diaries, letters, journals etc without the intention of publishing are later published in the form of an autobiography. Usually an autobiography of an influential person or celebrity commands a higher value than a biography because in case of the former, the words are directly from the horse's mouth.
