I feel the theme to The House on Mango Street is, "Do not base your choices on appearances, and looks, base them on interior." Throughout the book, Esperanza has been ashamed of her house on Mango Street, but she doesn't realize that her house has many good things, and that it would be too valuable to waste, and not come visit in the future.
