The name of Amitabh Bachchan's father was Harivansh Rai Bachchan. He was a very famous Hindi poet. He was born on November 27, 1907 and passed away on January 18, 2003 at the age of 95.

He received his formal schooling in a municipal school and followed his family's tradition of attending "Kayasth Paathshaalas" to learn Urdu which was the first step to a career in law. He also studied at the Allahabad University and Banaras Hindu University. .

He married his first wife in 1926 when he was only 19 and she was 14 years old. She died due to TB after ten years of their marriage. Shortly after that, he married again.This time he married a Sikh girl. From this marriage, he had two sons named Amitabh and Ajitabh.

Besides teaching English at the Allahabad University, he also spent two years at Cambridge University in St Catharine's College, Cambridge. He studied there with the famous English literature don, Thomas Rice Henn, and also received a doctorate in English Literature for his work on the Irish poet W.B. Yeats.

He is very famous for his early lyric poem Madhushala (The House of Wine), which was translated into English and many regional Indian languages including Bengali, Marathi and Malayalam.
