What makes a journey/quest book interesting to read?

I'm fine with quests, but journeys?  Ugh.  A few travel scenes are fine, but constant travel is boooooring.  I skip those parts.  Unless you're really, really good at characterization and banter, those travel scenes just end up sounding like a travelogue.

But sticking to the quest (e.g The Hobbit) is where the real interest lies. In how you grow with the character and experience everything they do. :)

That's what makes them interesting for me
