J.D.Robb's "In Death" series. Futuristic detective stories with great characters, a touch of romance (after all, Robb's other name is Nora Roberts) and scuds of laughter, She has a flair for humour.
Then there's David Baldacci's "Camel Club" septilogy. (I think I just invented that.) Five great yarns about an ageing demi-superhero.
But, really, it's hard to go past Tolkien's great LOTR trilogy. The movies were good. The book was better.
