When in London, the Lord Chamberlain's Men performed in James Burbage's theatre,(called The Theatre!) which was built in 1576, at Shoreditch, shrewdly outside of the city wall. When away from London, ie, performing to the country, which was a way of escaping the plague, which regularly swept across London, they would play in Town Hall's, Assembly Rooms. Great houses, large coaching inns, and anywhere where their need for space could be accommodated. The Globe was built in 1599, from pulling down the old Theatre, after a dispute with the landowner, Giles Allen, and transporting it, lock, stock and barrel across London Bridge to Bankside, Julius Caesar was the first play performed there.
