Certainly, Romeo and his confessor have a very close relationship, partly due to Shakespeare's own religious teaching. His mother, the very devout Catholic, Mary Arden, and his first tutor, Simon Hunt, who later repaired to Douai and became a Jesuit, instilled into him their Catholic influence, whereby Romeo tells his confessor all. This is a very marked difference to Shakespeare's opinion of his "hometown" Protestant ministers, Martext and Nathaniel, and Theological scholars have endlessly searched the texts for proof of his Catholisism, but, to no avail. It is thought, however, that Shakespeare did call fot the last rites on his deathbed.
