Himmelstoss is the name of a character in the book All Quiet on The Western Front written by Erich Maria Remarque. He is the instructor of Paul and his group of friends including Tjarden during their training and later is forced to join them on the front. His character is depicted as being power hungry and sadistic. He often taxes the recruits by increasing their work load. Tjarden is specifically targeted by Corporal Himmelstoss for urinating while sleeping. He is later re-educated by Himmelstoss by having another bed wetter alternate the top bed in the bunk they share. The concept was that each would end up peeing on the other. It was this extreme form of disciplinary action that resulted in Tjaden the glutton hating Himmelstoss the sadist and coward.
