Dear Catherine Kroesbergen,
The above list is a very fine one, and I am giving you a poem which if you like, then do read Emily Dickinson (1830-1886), perhaps you do already!
This is my letter to the world,
That never wrote to me -
The simple news that Nature told,
With tender majesty.
Her message is committed
To hands I cannot see;
For love of her, sweet countrymen,
Judge tenderly of me!
Two of my favourite mystic poets are Omar Khayyam (Fitzgerald's translation is the most popular) and A.E. (pen name of George Russell).
For sheer majesty and adventure: Sir Walter Scott (especially The Lay of the Last Minstrel ).
For comedy and unusual rhymes, Ogden Nash who not only writes clever poetry but often gives great advice. Here is one of his. After 56 years of happy marriage I can vouch for its effectiveness:
To keep your marriage flowing with love in the loving cup:
Whenever you're wrong admit it, whenever you're right, shut up!
You might have already read these but these are some that I've read and enjoyed.
T.S. Eliot
Robert Frost
Edgar Allan Poe
Maya Angelou
Oscar Wilde
Rudyard Kipling
Hi, I like the works of Elizabeth Jennings. Even if her poems mostly
revolve around the theme of melancholy, the words that she uses to express
herself are inspiring.
I really like the fact that she
did not write only love poems as many old poets did. What do you think
about her compositions?
William Shakespeare
Rudyard Kipling
Juan Ramón Jiménez
George Gordon Byron, Robert Burns, William Blake
