He has been shot twice and he tries to make friends with Henry in the line of wounded soldiers. He is concerned about the wound he assumes Henry must have. He follows Henry into the field where Jim Conklin dies and when he brings up the wound again, Henry feels ashamed and deserts him.

If you haven't read the book, you need to. It's a good book. It will also help you when you have a test.
