Has anybody noticed that kids books end "happy" after the bad guy dies in a really horrible way, like, oh, the big bad wolf burning?

Apparently the original stories of some of the fairytales and kid's books that we enjoy were actually a lot more gruesome and violent.

For example, in the original Little Red Riding Hood, she was eaten by the wolf and that was the end of it... No grandma, no woodcutter to the rescure.

First Red Riding Hood I read the wolf ate grandma, the woodsman found him sleeping, cut him open to let grandma out, filled him with rocks, and sewed him back up. The wolf woke up and tried to get up, but couldn't as he was too heavy.

Not the ones I've read the last few years or so. They end great but without the violence of the old books. You should read the two Clive Cussler books that I answered a question on earlier.  Things have changed since the old days. Authors put a little more into them now.
