Is it not said that art is 5% inspiration and 95% perspiration? I think you probably have to work hard to be creative. Also, contrary to popular perception, I don't think a "tortured soul" helps either (although sometimes it produces some strange effects - take a look at Louis Wain's work before and after his breakdown).

I think inspiration is paramount to creating. It is the motivating
force that makes you want to expressively act upon those triggered
feelings in order to create something.

"Creating" in my view
doesn't necessarily need "hard work" (a child can create), but the
quality of what was created may be questionable upon completion.

Perhaps
more Art has been created throughout history due to having a "tortured
soul"  rather than having a happy one. Art helps us organize our
thoughts and put them in perspective. Art helps our subconscious  to
consciously express itself through a medium that can transcend the
limitations of words.
