I'm writing a book and one the characters is in a psych ward. I've been researching but I'd like opinions from real people. Anything you can tell me about this place would help so much. Experience etc?

I am willing to help you. I have been in both public/private psych hospitals.
To answer your above questions-
Attempted suicide can lead to being scheduled ( sectioned, whatever you call it where you are) for 72 hours (I think). This is where you are forced to stay in hospital by either police or by a doctor. Public hospitals don't have radios or any electronics in the room because these can be used as weapons or smashed and used in self harm. Visitors are allowed but can be refused by patients or sometimes doctors might say it's best not to have visitors.
Any more questions- let me know :)

I should add that all of this depends on where you are setting the book as circumstances are different in different states/countries and I am from Australia.

So take that into account when taking out advice :)

Thank you, you have been very helpful. I'm thinking maybe the patient tried to drown herself. But her character is still a bit fuzzy and not the main character, but playing a major role in the lives of those around her.

Psych wards are horrible places, you confined to a tiny space, depending on whats wrong with you you can have 24 hour survailance, there is nothing to do except read a book or watch one of the very few movies provided. The food is disgusting and sometimes you hear people yelling and screaming completely random things.

Anything in particular you'd like to know?

P.s not from personal experience, but I work in mental health :P

Thanks so much for your answer. Would attempted suicide lead someone to a psych ward? Can they have a radio in their room or is it the stereotypical padded room? Can people visit a loved one? If the answer to these questions are no, is it possible that nurses on a particular shift would allow family to visit with a patient? I want my book to be as accurate as possible, although it's fiction.

Attempted suicide would definitley lead someone into a psych ward. They o have radios in their rooms but the rooms aren't padded. However they do take away anything that could be used to harm yourself...for example you only get a spoon to eat with, all plastic, sometimes they even take bedding away so you can't hang yourself with it, and they would be under 24 hour watch. There are visiting hours and often age restrictions for who can enter the ward. Are you on FB?
